he Soul Nebula (Westerhout 5 / IC 1848)
An ethereal and massive stellar nursery in the constellation Cassiopeia, located about 6,500 light-years from Earth. The nebula is filled with deep cavities and pillars of dense dust, sculpted by the intense radiation of embedded newborn stars. Together with its neighbor, the Heart Nebula, it forms one of the most famous and beautiful cosmic duos in the northern sky.
Beyond the frame
The cavities in the nebula are not merely empty spaces. They have been carved by the radiation and winds of massive young stars pushing the gas outward. Along the dense rims of these cavities, material is compressed and may begin forming new stars. One generation of stars thus reshapes the cloud and creates the conditions for the next.
