The Lagoon Nebula (M8)
A cosmic masterpiece of glowing gas and dust, located about 4,100 light-years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius. Named for the dark lane of dust that cuts across its bright center like a tranquil lagoon, it is one of the few stellar nurseries visible to the naked eye. At its heart, intense radiation from young star clusters powers violent storms, sculpting colossal funnels and pillars of interstellar material.
Beyond the frame
Within the brightest part of the nebula lies the Hourglass—a small but exceptionally active region shaped by a young massive star. Gas there is heated, stirred, and driven outward at high speed, in sharp contrast to the apparently tranquil form of the larger “lagoon.” This detail reveals that the broad cloud contains many different processes unfolding at the same time.
