The Fireworks Galaxy (NGC 6946)
A spiral galaxy in the constellation Cepheus, located about 25 million light-years from Earth. Rich in interstellar gas and dust, it is one of the most active star-forming galaxies in our cosmic neighborhood.
Beyond the frame
The name "Fireworks" is well deserved. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, ten supernovae have been observed in this galaxy—more than in any other nearby galaxy. The reason is its exceptionally high rate of star formation. Massive stars are constantly being born here, but they live only brief lives before ending in spectacular explosions. Each supernova enriches the galaxy with heavy elements, providing the raw material from which future generations of stars, planets, and perhaps even new worlds will eventually form.
