The Encounter
Hidden among the mosses, a battle unfolds beyond ordinary human perception. A wolf spider (family Lycosidae) has captured an ant—an opponent that, despite its small size, is equipped with a tough exoskeleton, powerful mandibles, and the ability to defend itself fiercely.
Beyond the frame
For many spiders, ants are far from easy prey. They are highly mobile, defend themselves with powerful mandibles, and some species even release defensive chemicals. For this reason, many predators avoid them altogether. Wolf spiders rely on speed and surprise, ending the encounter before the ant has a chance to mount an effective defence.
