Ant (Family Formicidae)
A close-up view of an ant reveals a world of fine textures, powerful mandibles, and sensitive antennae. Though only a few millimetres long, each individual is part of a society whose organisation and cooperation rank among the most sophisticated in the animal kingdom.
Beyond the frame
No ant could build a colony on its own. Each individual performs a specific role—collecting food, caring for the brood, defending the nest, or maintaining the tunnels. Coordination among thousands of ants relies primarily on chemical signals known as pheromones, allowing them to exchange information without sound or visual contact.
