The Cave Nebula (Sh2-155)
A hidden cosmic gem in the constellation Cepheus, located about 2,400 light-years away. The nebula owes its name to the bright arc of glowing gas that outlines a deep, dark dust lane, creating a striking illusion of an entrance to a mysterious celestial cave. It is an active star-forming region, where newborn stars are being cataloged deep within its dusty cocoons.
Beyond the frame
The dark “entrance” is not an empty cavern but a dense foreground cloud of dust absorbing visible light. Along its bright rim, radiation from nearby hot stars ionizes the gas, while pressure on the cloud may trigger new star formation. The contrast between the glowing wall and the black interior marks the boundary between exposed space and a hidden stellar nursery.
