The Christmas Tree Cluster and Cone Nebula (NGC 2264)
A festive cosmic structure in the constellation Monoceros, located about 2,500 light-years away. The bright young stars of the cluster trace the perfect outline of a Christmas tree, with its top crowned by the dark, mysterious silhouette of the Cone Nebula. This region is a dynamic stellar nursery, sculpted by the powerful radiation of newborn giant stars.
Beyond the frame
The recognizable “tree” exists only from our line of sight—the stars lie at different depths within the cloud. The more important structure is the dark Cone: a cold column of gas and dust resisting erosion by nearby hot stars. In its densest regions, material remains shielded and can continue collapsing toward the birth of new stars.
