The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51)
A spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici, located about 31 million light-years from Earth. It is famous for its well-defined spiral arms and its close interaction with the smaller companion galaxy NGC 5195.
Beyond the frame
The small galaxy beside M51 is far more than a passing companion. For hundreds of millions of years, the two galaxies have been shaping each other through gravity. This interaction has strengthened the Whirlpool's spiral arms and triggered waves of star formation within them. The elegant structure we see today is not permanent—it is a snapshot of an ongoing cosmic dance that continues even now.
